Reaching Out for Help

If you are in immediate danger, please call 911. For non-emergency support, The Caring Place operates a 24-hour crisis line. You can reach us locally at (219) 464-2128 or toll-free at 1-800-933-0466. Our trained staff are ready to listen and help you understand your options.

The Caring Place is the only 24-hour crisis line and emergency shelter in Porter County. We serve people experiencing domestic violence and sexual assault and their dependents, primarily in Lake, Porter, and Starke counties in Northwest Indiana, but we may also assist victims from across the country.

All shelter services are provided without charge. When you reach out, our staff can help you with crisis intervention, safety planning, and connecting you to shelter and other resources. You do not have to face this alone.

What to Expect at the Shelter

The Caring Place provides safe emergency shelter with a 24-bed capacity at our Valparaiso location. The shelter address is kept confidential for the safety of all residents.

In addition to a safe place to stay, residents have access to case management, legal counseling, support groups, and independent living planning. Our goal is to help you find safety now and build a path toward a life free from violence.
