You Are Not Alone

The Caring Place is a non-profit social service organization serving the needs of domestic violence and sexual assault victims in Lake, Porter, and Starke counties in Northwest Indiana. Established in 1977 by a group of volunteers in Hobart, Indiana, the agency is now located in Valparaiso.

In addition to safe shelter, The Caring Place provides community education, support groups, legal counseling and case management, and independent living planning. Because domestic violence can result in psychological as well as physical injury and even death, the State of Indiana has mandated that shelter services must be provided without charge. It costs $2,300 per month to provide food for those in shelter and at least $90,000 per month to run The Caring Place facilities and all our expanded programming and community outreach.

During one 24-hour period in Indiana, 1,863 domestic violence victims — both children and adults — found refuge in emergency shelters or transitional housing provided by local domestic violence programs. During that same 24-hour period, 522 hotline calls were answered.

The Caring Place is the only 24-hour crisis line and emergency shelter in Porter County. Together, we can step into those gaps, create a stronger community for all, and break the silence that hides the violence. A donation of any size helps us continue to save lives.
