About the Arizona Bar Foundation

The Arizona Bar Foundation exists to fulfill a straightforward but vital mission: preparing Arizona youth for civic responsibility and providing access to justice for Arizonans most in need. This work is carried out through financial and technical assistance to a broad network of partners — from teachers and school administrators to private attorneys, judges, legal service attorneys, and advocates.

The Foundation believes that the justice system should serve everyone, not just those who can afford representation. By funding legal service agencies, supporting pro bono efforts, and investing in law-related education, the Foundation helps ensure that the scales of justice remain balanced for all.

Over the years, the Foundation has granted millions of dollars in funds, mobilized hundreds of volunteers each year, assisted thousands of individuals annually, and reached hundreds of schools statewide. These numbers represent real people — families finding stability, students discovering civic engagement, and communities growing stronger.

The Arizona Bar Foundation honors individuals who exemplify the highest ideals of the legal profession and public service. Among its most prestigious recognitions is the Craig Distinguished Services Award, given to attorneys who demonstrate adherence to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession and service to their communities.

The William E. Morris Pro Bono Service Award recognizes extraordinary contributions by Arizona attorneys in making legal services available to those who otherwise could not afford them. These awards shine a light on the substantial voluntary services provided by Arizona attorneys and inspire others to follow their example.

Recent honorees include Judge Samuel Thumma, recognized for his extraordinary commitment to improving access to justice and modernizing the court system, and J. Robert Walston, Jr., whose three decades of dedicated pro bono work through the Volunteer Lawyers Program transformed countless lives.
