About Chef Dontaye Ball

AKA "Mr. Gumbo" — Making gumbo and making headlines.

Gumbo Is a Family Tradition

To Chef Dontaye there's no doubt: gumbo is the most important food to American culture. It's a dish that comes from the soul, and it's social at its core. Much like the ingredients that come together to make a good pot, gumbo has the power to bring people together and establish community.

Gumbo is nothing new for Chef Dontaye. His grandma — who he called "The Big G" — first served it to him when he was eight years old, and it made a deep impression. He recalls her cooking the roux slowly with a wooden spoon in a cast-iron skillet. As soon as the gumbo was ready, he remembers his neighbors eagerly gathering for a taste.

He never forgot his first bowl. Over the years he learned to blend his knowledge of traditional African stews with his classic French Escoffier training. He learned the basics — the gumbo guidelines, if you will — and then learned how to break them.

In 2022, Chef Dontaye announced the opening of his first brick-and-mortar location and ran a successfully funded Kickstarter. What started as a weekly Farmers Market booth grew into a full restaurant, a catering operation, and one of the most visible Black-owned businesses in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood.

A special thank you to Marcel Banks, owner of Frisco Fried, the restaurant previously located at the site of the new Gumbo Social location.

More Than a Restaurant

Gumbo Social has positioned itself as more than a restaurant in the Bayview. From the Bayview Block Party to Juneteenth events to community gatherings, the brand has built its identity around showing up for the neighborhood.

Gumbo Social also offers full-service soul food catering for private and corporate events, and hosts its annual All-You-Can-Eat Seafood Boil — the biggest summer tradition and Mr. Gumbo's annual birthday celebration.

Because good music and good food go hand in hand like sausage and okra, Gumbo Social also curates playlists for the restaurant. It's all part of the experience.
