Because Mental Illness Is Not a Crime

We believe that sharing our lived experiences helps properly educate, support, and strengthen families and the communities we call home.

Real Lives. Real Experiences.

Patients Not Prisoners is a nonprofit organization serving families across St. Johns, Duval, and Putnam counties in Florida. We exist because too many people living with mental illness end up criminalized rather than cared for. Many of those incarcerated sit at the intersection of racism, poverty, and mental illness — and we're working to change that.

Our work centers on three pillars: Advocacy, Education, and Support. We advocate with lawmakers for Mental Health Courts and restorative Diversion Programs. We educate communities to understand mental illness and its effects, encouraging empathy. And we support families with access to mental health services, including free therapy through BetterHelp and restorative circles.

When one person struggles with mental illness, the whole family carries the weight. You're not alone — and we're here to help families feel heard, find support, and build connection.

What We Do

  • Mental Health Advocacy — We work with lawmakers to establish Mental Health Courts and restorative Diversion Programs in our communities.
  • Public Education — We educate the community to understand mental illness and its effects, encouraging empathy and creating a stronger family support system.
  • Family Support — When one person is affected, many are affected. We provide access to free therapy through BetterHelp and restorative circles for families struggling to support their loved ones.
  • Creative Connection — Several times a month we provide an avenue for mental health socialization and acceptance in a safe, therapeutic environment with meals, snacks, and peer support.
  • Letters of Hope — Your words reach those who are struggling with mental illness, isolated, hospitalized, or incarcerated — reminding them that they matter and are not forgotten.
